Frequently Asked Questions

Does my son or daughter need to know how to skate?

No. Kids of all skating levels get involved in hockey. The foundation of a good player is skating and time is spent developing and improving that skill at all levels.

Kids at the Atom level usually come into our program with little to no skating experience. We see beginners at all age levels and the kids catch up at an amazingly quick rate.

When does the season start and end?

For the Atoms, all Mites, Intermediate City League (non-travel Squirts & PeeWees) and Advanced City League (non-travel Bantams & High School age)  - the season starts the last full week of October and goes thru the first weekend in March.  For Travel League players at the Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam and Lady Flyers, ice time and team tryouts will begin early October.  Their season ends with SDAHA League Tournaments in late February.  The Youth JV and Varsity team tryouts will be held in late August with ice times starting after tryouts are completed.

Can I rent equipment?

Yes. Equipment can be rented for children at the Atom and Mite levels.  Rental Equipment, as available,  will be offered to ICL and ACL on a first come, first serve basis.  All players will need to provide their own hockey skates, stick, hockey socks and mouthguard.   Rental gear check out dates will be scheduled in October.

Will my child have to travel?

No. SFYHA has a City League available for those players who would like to play, but do not want to travel.  SFYHA City Leagues will include Mini-Atoms, Atoms,  Mite City League, Intermediate City League (Squirts & PeeWees) and Advanced City League (Bantams & High School age).
